Internet penetration is still very low in India.

From vanilla CD based installation to becoming productive is a big distance.
Many useful things are missing from system.

I am posting list of software I require to become productive/comfortable:
Video CD display - movies and mp3 should play right away
make/autoconf/automake/g++ - students/programmers require this compiler
OpenJDK compiler + docs + Netbeans for Java programming
Monodevelop - for C#
Hindi support - fonts + Input method support
Linux source code

May be my needs reflect those of programmers and students.

Somethings which I never use are :
Evolution - mostly people use internet based mails

Please add to the above list, so this problem can be addressed.

A standalone CD/DVD installation which works for most user categories/patterns would be great !

You are right, the requirement of Internet connectivity is Ubuntu's Achilles heel. A standalone CD would be great, but then wouldn't you still need an Internet connection to install the hardware specific drivers? Any ideas for a workaround? There would have to be a few basic types defined here, i can see that, like Nvidia, ATI, etc...

This guy has solved it all.

I think this is a nice workable solution.
Cooperation is the key.

After plain installation, take your pen drive to a friend's place and copy the stuff from their /var/cache/apt/archives.

Due to effect of 'locality of reference' the most useful and needed software would be available there.

I think the number of internet connections is low, but through friend circle it can amplify to 10 times quickly. Not to mention second order distribution.

The guy is a prodigy--but still it would entail that the friend has the same hardware configuration as you in order to get your hardware drivers as well.

I wanted to use this for my other problem: http://forum.ubuntu-in.info/topic/15, but when i went to /var/cache/apt/archives, i found only an empty folder called 'partial' and a locked file of unknown type called, guess what, 'lock'. Really need to get fundas clear.

Well this worked on two machines, which I use daily.

You may be right about hardware drivers.
But I am pondering over my observation. On all the five machines where I have tried Ubuntu 8.04/8.10 the basics of system like display, sound, ethernet etc were detected.
Only on one machine nvidia drivers needed to be downloaded, that too for better performance and cool effects.

In the cases the hardware was not detected, even internet connection didn't help me.

If we make a list of often needed software, PCQuest/'Linux for you' may agree to carry these on their magazine DVD.

Do check the link out, http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/download.html, and the application was just sitting there in the repositories. However there is a bug in aptoncd that is in Synaptic, which gives
"FATAL -> Failed to fork" error when you run aptoncd. Also when Aptoncd's deb package is opened with Gdebi, the "install" button remained greyed out. All this could be a problem specific to my computer, but i thought it would help. I managed to install it from the tarball. Now only the 'driver install without Internet' problem remains unsolved. At least as far as i know.

I guess we can take a poll for 'which' packages should be included in each category, and what are the most common hardware that is used in our community. Once decided on the packages, the developers/students in our community can build our own custom distro based on Ubuntu. This way, most of the people will have most of the hardware drivers and other packages 'out of the box'. So every time, may be after a week or so of release of new Ubuntu version, we can have our version released.
What say guys? :-)

REMASTERKEYS! Sorry for yelling, but i am so thrilled, i just learned about it--i mean, this beats Norton Ghost, mondorescue, sbackup, etc. all rolled into one, hands down. It has a GUI too, and for a new user, this would be like a "balm for the bilious" to quote one of P.G. Wodehouse' characters. Haven't burned the iso, so i haven't checked it out on a virtual machine yet, but if it works, who needs to backup!

Thanks buddy. I tried aptoncd, its good.

So the final scene would become:
Install using standard Ubuntu CD
then get aptoncd image from a friends.
But does that solve problem of drivers. Also most of my friends may not be interested in localization support.

I am adding another use-case:
I have a Hindi keyboard and wish to complete one full cycle of usage without switching to English. Currently Ubuntu is not ready for that. We possibly need DVD edition with these extra packages on it.

Another solution is Repositories.

I have 32GB Downloaded version of Ubuntu 10.04 repositories
