I've been trying to use Linux for past few months but never succeeded i recently installed ubuntu 8.10,and again the same problem after i enter my username a password the screen goes blank i get only the cursor nothing else the keyboard freezes too I've tried fedora , suse ,and all made the same problem
i have a Intel 2.8 G Hz processor with asrock intel chipset motherboard
today i got the ubuntu 8.10 desktop cd. but i was not able to install. it says checksum error. but i am using the cd's sent from ubuntu and didn't wrote the cd by myself. it happens with ubuntu 7.10 and ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I have ubuntu 6.06 LTS which works well. My system is an AMD 64 2800 with 512 MB of RAM. Plz help me..
I don't understand the part about the checksum error if the CD is from Ubuntu, it could be that you may have scratched it or something, inadvertently. Have you tried the option "Test CD for Integrity"? This is the md5sum for Ubuntu 8.10 desktop-i386.iso: 24ea1163ea6c9f5dae77de8c49ee7c03, you can check whether it's usable by making an iso image of the CD and checking the md5sum. If it is different, you can download a torrent for the same from the official Ubuntu site, point to the folder where this 'defective' iso is and hopefully it will correct the defect. This, so you wouldn't have to download the whole image.
thank u sadicote. i have tried the md5sum. its the same. i have tried all versions of ubuntu like 8.10, 7.10,8.04 LTS. today i tried 6.06 LTS and that is also not working. it was working before. once the boot starts it will just display message checksumerror, system halted. thats it. i dont know what else to do. plz help me..
If your md5sum check is okay, i really cannot say why you still get the checksum error other than to speculate that something could be wrong with your RAM. You need more expert guidance here, i am sorry i could not be more helpful.
