Its very simple...
download the desktop 32bit (or 64bit if ur hardware supports) iso file from the ubuntu site, burn it in a CD. Change the "bootup" sequence in the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD. Once it boots from the cd u will get options to "try ubuntu without installing" (good option for new users), "install ubuntu".
Install Ubuntu the steps are very easy and self explanatory. Hope this gives u a good idea.
