Most BSNL linemen provide configure your modem/router through the bridging mode. If that is the case, you have to create a new DSL connection, and also, change your ip/subnet masks in your LAN Connection (eth0) to 192.168.1.2 and 255.255.255.0 respectively
Alternatively, to avoid the bridging mode altogether, make a ppp0 connection in the router itself, and add your bsnl username and password ( password is by default password, and username can be obtained by dialing 1500 from your phone and asking for the internet id.)

Hey all :]
Mostly BSNL configures you over PPPoE and will give you username and password to use.
If you are using PPPoE.You can use pppoeconf
Open your terminal and
cool@boy:~$sudo pppoeconf
Provide the password and follow on screen instructions.Hope it helps.

Hi all,
We are not alone. I also have BSNL Broadband. I used to connect to internet by a connection made by just typing my user name and password in a DSL connection , that is in ubuntu 9.04.Today I upgraded from ubuntu 9.10 using alternate CD which I downloaded in 9.04. After upgrading and restarting, I tried to connect using the already existing DSL connection. And I have the same problem.
To make things sure, I started the live CD of ubuntu 9.04 and checked if the internet is working. And then to my surprise it is working.
Anyone please help !!

Hey everybody,
Let this be known to you all that, there is some problem with the Network Manager in 9.10, the reason why you are unable to connect to the internet even after following proper steps similar to 9.04, even, I'm experiencing the same issue as described above by "sebinbenjamin". Therefore, I roled back to Ubuntu 9.04 the jaunty Jackalope, my all-time faivoraite. -

Dear Fellows,
I am a novice in this LINUX addiction.
Recently installed ubuntu 9.10.
Following problems occurred which are still unsolved even after repeated attempts :
1.Unable to connect to internet using bsnl braodband using Nokia Siemens C2110 ADSL Modem.I have tried
sudo pppoeconf
then okeyed all the fields and gave the username and password as I used while connecting to internet in windows.
I could not understand how to edit /etc/resolv.conf
even then tried to open it using
gedit /etc/relsov.conf
then saved one or two ip addresses
as nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 117.197.17.31
then sudo pon dsl-provider
then I oopened firefox and opened url 192.168.1.1 which opened Nokia Siemens Network where I tried to modify bridge pppoe_0_100 with the password and username and then dial which showed the following message
"our Router is ready to connect to Broadband.
Authentication with PPP server is in progress.Wait for sometime for authentication process. You can see the status on internet conection page here "
But even after a long wait I could not open any other website.
2.I cannot play music files which are normally played in windows.
3.I cannot print using my HP 1020 laserjet printer as its driver in ubuntu is not available.
I need ur help urgently as otherwise even if I have installed ubuntu 9.10 I am not going to use it .It is almost worthless for me.
eagerly waiting your help -
