Hi, here is one more new guy from coastal city of Mangalore. As we all know, Linux awareness is growing strong now a days, I have installed Ubuntu for 4-5 machines and they liked it more than Windows 7. Also, In kerala state, all the primary school computers are operating in Ubuntu OS. It's good to see Linux OS is gaining momentum now a days. For newbies for Linux world and Ubuntu, I recommend this version of Ubuntu where they do not have to worry about installing additional software's and additional learning.

Hi guys... Mind if i join... Hope you won't.
Well, i'm a college student. But believe me or not, the linux usage at college was very low. But now things have started to change. I always tell my friends use linux. They used to make fun of me, but ultimately the Tux won... Well now the same people are behind me to help them in their linux installations. I suggested Ubuntu, but there are users of other good linux distrisutions like Fedora, Open-Suse too(heard that SUSE has come into some controversial agreement with Microsoft Corp.). Many of them have moved onto linux because they're fed up with the virus attacks in windows, and thereby the need for frequent reinstallations. I just love my ubuntu 9.04..

Sorry about the rant, had a little too much to drink last night, but this is the Canteen, right? And as you said elsewhere, the lack of Internet penetration is the main setback here, as far as Ubuntu usage is concerned.

To add variety :
My other laptop has WinXP (yeah licensed) but situation is not so bad there.

On top of XP I have : GIMP + Openoffice (with Hindi support) + Netbeans for Java/C++ + Visual Studio 2008 C#/C++ + Firefox + FreeMind etc.

With both OS the same application toolset is available. Yeah for games, XP wins straightaway. But the situation is changing soon with Qt 4.5 GPL, OpenGL revived as 3.0, Ubuntu going great and Vista crash.

Add to it the transition of Enterprise apps to Web technologies and Java, everything is making way for Linux.

Keep working on the problems people face during/post transition to Ubuntu. They face these problems on Windows as well, but silently.
With Linux culture they would - speak / become part of solution.

To pursue my pet peeve further; we have here a veritable blessing that can assist the education of the underprivileged at practically no cost, and you will not move a muscle to give it a try and spread awareness of it?--just because Microsoft Windows has a slight edge over it where 'games', 'user friendliness' and other frivolities are concerned? (moot point, but i will concede it for the purpose of this argument). You will continue to abase yourself with the "your copy of Windows did not pass the WGA..." notification on your desktops just for that? C'mon..Wintendos snap out of your apathy. Just think of the cost in Rupees, of a MS operating system plus an MS Office suite which i believe is the minimum to have a working MS Windows computer. And then compare it to a Linux distro and what you get with it, without any strings attached. Doesn't anything other than the response of your joystick motivate you anymore? Now if you were an affluent American or European geek, who could afford to make split hair judgements about the technical advantages that Windows had over Linux, and vice-versa, in this or that area of performance, it would have been understandable, but for bog's sake, you are using a pirated copy of Windows just because your peers acquainted you with it, and you are just too much of a chickenshit and a cheapskate to try anything different!

This post is not addressed to the members of this forum, it is a message i hope, that will be passed on to 'Wintendos' of our acquaintance. Let me clarify once and for all what i mean by a Wintendo in the local context; he is one who cannot write a simple script to save his life, has no idea what a shell, or a kernel is, but will still swear by MS Windows upon all that is holy to him--he is your typical herd animal. I do not speak out of a sense of superiority, but as someone who used to be one of them, and so. knows them inside out.

Okay, 3 is a good number, i will get this off my chest--I tried to convince others around me to use Ubuntu, showed them my desktop, explained how they could have a world of applications with just one CD, even offered to make free copies for them right away, so they wouldn't have to buy/download, or wait for Shipit.com,(whisper: Now most of these were people who used pirated versions of XP, and 'RockXP' didn't work for them anymore)--it was like talking to a brick wall! What's with these Wintendos?!?
