I keep elaborate notes at my http://williambuell.wordpress.com about my experiences with Ubuntu installations and applications.

Today's 7 hour reinstall is documented step by step at this blog link

I hope that such notes will help other beginners with their first installation.

Also, I bookmark all the useful pages I find at

I guess our community lacks a central place for putting up good tutorials related to Ubuntu. I think adding this under 'Get going' section is ok. I'm now gonna discuss a few commands, that i know in ubuntu. Its mainly for beginner's, sorry geeks may find it boring... [:)]

If your md5sum check is okay, i really cannot say why you still get the checksum error other than to speculate that something could be wrong with your RAM. You need more expert guidance here, i am sorry i could not be more helpful.

I don't understand the part about the checksum error if the CD is from Ubuntu, it could be that you may have scratched it or something, inadvertently. Have you tried the option "Test CD for Integrity"? This is the md5sum for Ubuntu 8.10 desktop-i386.iso: 24ea1163ea6c9f5dae77de8c49ee7c03, you can check whether it's usable by making an iso image of the CD and checking the md5sum. If it is different, you can download a torrent for the same from the official Ubuntu site, point to the folder where this 'defective' iso is and hopefully it will correct the defect. This, so you wouldn't have to download the whole image.
