Have you tried the option &quot;Test CD for Integrity&quot;? This is the md5sum for Ubuntu 8.10 desktop-i386.iso: 24ea1163ea6c9f5dae77de8c49ee7c03, you can check whether it's usable by making an iso image of the CD and checking the md5sum. If it is different, you can download a torrent for the same from the official Ubuntu site, point to the folder where this 'defective' iso is and hopefully it will correct the defect.
