WLAN/NdisWrapper

With NdisWrapper it concerns tools which use the Windows drivers of WLAN maps to bring this under Linux to the running. With some chip sentences one can get on the homepage of the manufacturer special chip sentence drivers. These are to be preferred to the provided Windows drivers. Ndiswrapper needs a driver's file with the ending.inf.
Preparation
Before one begins with the installation of NdisWrapper, one should absolutely peruse to himself the instructions for the WLAN installation! Basically almost every WLAN map with NdisWrapper should be executable. If own map is not performed here, one should at least try it, nevertheless.
With most maps in this list the used chip sentence and a download spring is also given for the driver. Should this not be the case, one can try it still with the attached Windows drivers. The suitable drivers must become first on the hard disk copies and perhaps entpackt. With files of a driver's CD the writing rights [6] must be still put for all users. Otherwise cannot integrate ndiswrapper this into the system.
If the driver's packages are given as an exe file, these have to go about a Windows system, with the help of one of the programmes
cabextract (universe,)
unshield (universe,)
or with the help of Wine entpackt become.
If became the Windows archive with wine entpackt, the files are to be found in the concealed folder $HOME/.wine / drive_c / programmes / Name_des_Treibers.
First the following packages must become instal :
ndiswrapper-utils - to Dapper
ndiswrapper utils 1.9 - From Feisty
ndisgtk (to Gutsy in universe – from Hardy in main)
If no Internet connection exists in the affected PC for downloading of the ndiswrapper packages, the installation-CD can be inserted. This must be integrated into Synaptic-package management about the menu point Treatment as a spring. Then both determining ndiswrapper packages are found by searching function and can be installed. However, the other approach must occur because of the non-availability of the GUI (ndisgtk) by terminal.
After the installation of the packages one clicks under "system-> system management / administration-> Windows WLAN drivers" on "new driver instal". After the choice of the suitable inf file of the Windows driver the driver should appear in the list and under it also "hardware available: Yes" stand. If it has not worked, it can help every now and then ndisgkt by hand as a Root by

sudo ndisgtk
to start.

Configuration of the canals 12 and 13
The way smashed below does not function in Jaunty any more. The regularisation of the canals was changed, see the also Jaunty release Notes. If they are put below given options, the Wlan will not presumably function under Jaunty.
Some WLAN drivers are put normally on the US-amerkanische WLAN regulation. Specifically expresses itself in it that only the canals can be used 1-11. Nevertheless, in the EU the canals 12 and 13 are also permitted, in Japan, in addition, still canal 14. Which canals the map supports at moment, one finds out with WLAN/wireless-tools.
iwlist chan
The Regulierungsdomain is steered according to Kernelversion by different modules:
With Kernel 2.6.27 (from Intrepid Ibex) or higher this is cfg80211
With use of the linux backports modules steers lbm_cw_cfg80211
With versions before Kernel 2.6.27, nevertheless, mac80211
The option ieee80211_regdom=EU must be handed over to these. There are instead of the EU still other possible Regdomainen possibly JP for Japan. With the module mac80211 does not place ieee80211_regdom=64 an international Standarddomain with the canals 1-14 during the EU functions.

Wireless LAN (Wireless Local area Network, WLAN, without cable local network) calls a "wireless" local radio network and mostly a standard of the IEEE 802.11-family is meant. A WLAN can be pursued in two kinds (modes) – in the infrastructure mode or in the ad hoc-mode.

In the infrastructure mode a base station, often a Wireless Access Point, is distinguished especially. He co-ordinates the single net knots. In the ad hoc-mode no station is particularly distinguished, but everybody is equivalent. Ad hoc-nets can be built up fast and without big expenditure. One does not plan that packages are handed on. It can seem that a physically centrally standing computer can reach the whole net, a computer in the edge area, nevertheless, only one part. Maximum 6 connections are possible for it in the ad hoc-mode.
The focus lies here on the infrastructure mode: one or several computers establish communication with a central Access Point.
To be able to be of use with Ubuntu WLAN, it is at first necessary to instal the WLAN map and then to configure suitably what should never happen without encoding.
More and more people use radio network works in her computer surroundings, because these have turned out extremely useful. Linux supports meanwhile originally a lot of WLAN maps. Still there are cases over and over again where the manufacturers of the chip sentences important for the installation to themselves deny her specifications to give change. But also in this case there is remedy. Thus nearly all WLAN maps can be installed under Linux.
Preparation
Basically the packages had to go at the company of a WLAN map
*

      wireless-tools
*

      wpasupplicant

instal become. They contain some tools to work on the settings of the map and to let indicate information about the WLAN (wireless-tools) and permit encoding on the newest state of the technology (wpasupplicant). One finds closer information about wireless-tools on this homepage {en}. The supported encoding technologies are explained on the wpasupplicant page {en} closer.
If it concerns a PCMCIA map (Cardbus), the package still has to go

    *

      pcmciautils

be installed.
Examination
WLAN maps use a whole series of different chip sentences. These are often supported by Ubuntu directly (just with notebooks). In the case nothing must be installed. So one should check first briefly in the terminal whether the map was recognised. With the order
iwconfig
if one receives a listing of all recognised network devices. Should the map not be performed here, an additional driver must be installed. In the successful case the result looks about thus:
user@station: ~ $ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

ath0 IEEE 802.11 g unassociated ESSID
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:14:BF:36:E2:B9
Bit Rate:12 Mb/page Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=0 / 3
Retry:off RTS thr:off fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=0 / 94 signals level =-68 dBm Noise level =-95 dBm
Rx disabled nwid:0 Rx disabled crypt:0 Rx disabled of frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Disabled misc:0 Missed beacon:0

eth0 no wireless extensions.

sit0 no wireless extensions.
The interfaces which are marked with no wireless extensions support obviously no WLAN. In this case is ath0 the recognised map. However, the WLAN interface can be called as well wlan0, eth1, etc. It is vital, in any case, that "Access Point" is recognised, if such is actively and in reach. In this case is to be done nothing else and it can become continued in the overview with the segment Configuration.
Configuration
After a successful installation and recognising the WLAN map this must be configured. This means as a rule, a connection with a Router / Access Point should be produced, so that one gets about that Internet access. In addition one must know which kind of connection of the Router offers. In the coarse are this WPA encoding, WEP encoding and no encoding. It is advised urgently against renouncing encoding (see segment Juridical). WEP encoding is cracked and should be used only if the Router supports no WPA encoding.
For an optimally functioning WLAN (which produces a connection already with the boat process) it is recommended to configure the connection by means of wpa supplicant. Here a list of all possibilities:
Wiki/Icons/background.png
With the help of a graphic surface
*
Network manager can produce connections with all kinds of networks (also LAN)
*
Wifi radar supports WPA and WEP
*
Wicd is a graphic surface for wpa supplicant and an alternative to the Network manager.
Wiki/Icons/terminal.png
With the help of the terminal
wpa to furnish the WLAN supplicant - The momentary king's way. In this manner the new Upstart is also optimally used by Edgy (the connection breaks off, it is built up automatically anew).
wireless-tools - Offering general information about the WLAN (e.g., available nets) and allows WEP and uncoded connections to be based.
/etc/network/interfaces - The most important configuration file for the network (whether LAN or WLAN); here sooner or later one looks, in any case, purely. In this article her contents are explained.

I face the same problem.

1) Got a BSNL broadband connection (huawei modem)
2) Got a Airlink 420w wireless router
3) Ubuntu 9.04

I have connected the BSNL modem to my wireless router and pppoe is enabled. Everything works like charm when i use windows, wireless connects and internet is working.

But when i use ubuntu, wireless connects with no issue, but internet is not working, when i check router pppoe is not connected.
NOTE: At the same time if I use another laptop running on windows, it can connect easily.

Surprisingly this thing works after say 5-10 mins.

Weird behavior searched lots of forum, but no idea what could be wrong.

I am pretty sure issue is not due to wireless adaptor as i have ubuntu on dual boot and same works when on windows.

If one owns a so-called DSL-Router which is connected about normal network cables {de} with the connected calculators, one needs himself around the equipment of the Internet connection under Ubuntu do not worry. The DSL-Router itself builds up the connection and makes available this then on the local network. In the DSL-Router mostly works an integrated DHCP server {de} which hands over her connecting data to the linked calculators.

Many DSL-Router own, in the meantime, the possibility to connect calculator also without cable by WLAN {de}. Here one must follow, actually, the same like with an interwiring, indeed, the arrangement of the WLAN adaptor in the computer often means a little work.

i asks you are like goes on the Internet? DSL with or without Router?

As far as BSNL Broadband concerned, The Modem itself takes care of PPPOE configuration. the only parameter is you should not assign IP address to the ETH port which is connected to the broadband modem (i.e the modem will act as DHCP server and it will assign the IP address)

i don't much about configuring ubuntu but i had also had also the same problem
recently i installed ubuntu 9.04 and the type of internet connection is BSNL 500c plan,
they have given a username and password and modem UTSarcom ut300r2u

After some effort of surfing on internet i got the solution.

go to applications->accessories->terminal
type 'pppoeconf'
it will give list of networks available (in my system it showes eth0,pan0,eth avahi, pan avahi)
go on pressing enter for defaults
provide username and password when asked provided by the isp
then continue pressing enter untill last
now you will have your internet connection working

solution2:to have GUI application "gnome-network-admin "

connect to internet first as above using commands using command pppoe as above
go to synaptic package manager install the "gnome-network-admin" package
the new package can be accessed from systems->admin->network admin
if you have connected before installation it will have all values otherwise give these values
1.go to properties of both wired network and give as dhcp
2.go to properties of modem give pppoe and provide username and password , then in modem tab give as pan0(it cobfigures automatically if not provided)
3.in dns tab it will have some values otherwise give these values
218.248.255.139 and other which i saw in ubuntu india page before but now i lost it

add an network admin appallet into panel and every time you con monitor network connection using that. and also you can monitor network in system->admin>network tools

using this i have unbreaked network from many days and i believe that this will help you

you may find it helpful if you go through these pages

I have the same PPOE problem.

It seems no one knows how to get PPPOE in Ubuntu to work over a LAN cable net connection.

Really disappointing. Had queried on a dozen Linux forums and they don't even know anything called "cable ISP"
