Is there anybody in this forum who lives in Cochin (or rather Kochi) or maybe someone in Kerala. I was hoping to find someone who knows a bit of Ubuntu and installing Ubuntu etc, to fix my mom's computer in Cochin. My moms computer runs Ubuntu 9.10 i.e. Karmic Koala. It ran fine until one day it came up with a Grub error. It will take a reinstall of Grub2 after booting up using a livecd.

As for me, I live in San Jose, USA and won't be going home any time soon. Hence the request to someone to help me out!!

Thanks in advance,

Hi, here is one more new guy from coastal city of Mangalore. As we all know, Linux awareness is growing strong now a days, I have installed Ubuntu for 4-5 machines and they liked it more than Windows 7. Also, In kerala state, all the primary school computers are operating in Ubuntu OS. It's good to see Linux OS is gaining momentum now a days. For newbies for Linux world and Ubuntu, I recommend this version of Ubuntu where they do not have to worry about installing additional software's and additional learning.

Hi! People
Asyou all know its a hectic task ahead . lets all foss people get together and raise a project for the same.

If anyone interested please contact me on animeshmeher@gmail.com.

As a starting point of discussion, i found that people are unaware of Linux or ubuntu as an alternate OS and the

My opinion is that Ubuntu doesn't include much software, with it to keep the installation cd as small as possible. And more easier for beginner's to start with, as they need not go to the task of selecting individual packages, from the available one. And above all this much of the software is not included by default, in ubuntu cd so as to abide by the 'Ubuntu promise'-

Ubuntu CDs contain only free software application

Reference
So, i think its justifiable. Well anyhow its really easy to install new softwares via Synaptic. So, no problems there i guess..

Yep. Jaunty Jackalope has ext4 support. But in the Karmic Koala, its going to be the default root partition type. And the ext4 filesystem is awesome, with its tremendous share to the improvement of the boot-time, and also in the reduction of write time for large files.

Hi guys... Mind if i join... Hope you won't.
Well, i'm a college student. But believe me or not, the linux usage at college was very low. But now things have started to change. I always tell my friends use linux. They used to make fun of me, but ultimately the Tux won... Well now the same people are behind me to help them in their linux installations. I suggested Ubuntu, but there are users of other good linux distrisutions like Fedora, Open-Suse too(heard that SUSE has come into some controversial agreement with Microsoft Corp.). Many of them have moved onto linux because they're fed up with the virus attacks in windows, and thereby the need for frequent reinstallations. I just love my ubuntu 9.04..

Thanks buddy. I tried aptoncd, its good.

So the final scene would become:
Install using standard Ubuntu CD
then get aptoncd image from a friends.
But does that solve problem of drivers. Also most of my friends may not be interested in localization support.

I am adding another use-case:
I have a Hindi keyboard and wish to complete one full cycle of usage without switching to English. Currently Ubuntu is not ready for that. We possibly need DVD edition with these extra packages on it.
[Read articles from here, you may appreciate this use-case more:
हिन्दी पर विचारोत्तेजक लेख (http://pratibhaas.blogspot.com/2008/10/blog-post.html)

How do we solve it elegantly? Or is this good enough.

What do you say?

Hi Sadicote,

I have some other concerns too. See in my country you can start from anywhere and can do a lot of things. So I was occupied with
- my singing (now I spend .5 hr daily)
- finding a vocal teacher in local area (there are two interesting, fragmented, half out of date sites for this http://chandrakantha.com/, http://www.vibotunes.com)
- purchasing taanpura
- Hindi support (localization support on PC, Hindi wikipedia articles) etc
- Fedora 10 and 11 (office work packages are stuck to Fedora distro), but Fedora has clear one up - they have good set of SW on single DVD. I wish we had it for Ubuntu. More on the other forum.

How life ?

cheers :)

Hellow everybody, i hope i don't need to mark this as [offtopic]!!!

We, at K.C College, Churchgate are hosting a Techfest called Techrenegade, which like many Techfests consist of events like programming, gaming with other events like debates, group discussions and similar ones from the fields of IT and Computer Science.
this year, we are planning to take the Fest open source with turning all our major platforms for the events onto linux, more specifically, ubuntu.
We're looking forward for approaching Canonical and its partners for the sponsorship and hence need to know what offers we could make to have deals benefiting both the parties.
Also if anyone from the LocoTeam would like to sponsor or help us with our Fest, please post in here or mail me at akshay.aksci@gmail.com.

Another advantage i discovered, that Gloria has over Jaunty; when playing .swf files with Firefox in Jaunty, the audio would stutter and sometimes go off completely. Also the pause button would not function. No such problems in Gloria. Now i do not understand exactly why and how, because Linux Mint still uses the 2.6.28-11 kernel, whereas the latest kernel that Jaunty updates to by default is the 2.6.28-13. You just have to try it out to see for yourself. I know the purists will sneer (no offense techies, i rely on you to solve my tech. problems), but what can i say, it's been only 2 days and already i am head-over-heels.

Hi,
Just installed it, love it. Installing my Nvidia drivers was somewhat easier than in Jaunty. Bid a tearful goodbye to my Intrepid partition today. It had served me well. Do try it out, guys! Since it's based on a Jaunty Kernel no surprises here by way of performance, good for it's looks, menu and ability to run common applications out of the box.

It is a fact that all Caucasians--even the most ardent and sincere champions of equality and human rights--secretly, perhaps even subconsciously, hold the conviction that they are a superior people. This can clearly be seen in the semantic outrage that has been perpetrated by the English language when they are called "white" while referring to their skin colour, which in reality is a shade of pink. Only albinos can truly be called white. People of other origins have their actual skin colours attributed to them, the Middle-easterners and south Asians are generally said to be brown, the Orientals, yellow and the Africans, black. The intention then can only be, to subliminally attribute to themselves, characteristics defined by other meanings of the word "white" like, pure, free from blame, chaste, etc. when they are referred to thus. That is why perhaps, even the dregs of society responsible for the recent spate of attacks on Indians in Australia, the US and the UK, revel in this erroneous notion of superiority, and think of those they abuse as the other, and something less than human. I urge the world to acknowledge this fact, and henceforth, to refer to them by their actual colour, which is pink, and which has no extraneous meanings or ideas associated with it; usage and word association play a significant role in shaping the psyche and conscience, which in turn affects actions. This is how Americans justified enslaving blacks--there still exist pseudo-scientific studies demonstrating that the African was mentally less capable than the "white" man and therefore, less than fully human--this is how Nazism was born, this is why the loss of few thousand American lives supposedly justified the killing of millions of Iraqis, this is why everybody remembers the date '9/11' and very few remember or even know the dates on which the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place, and this is why the UN is so complacent when it comes to dealing with atrocities and war crimes against people of "lesser" origins. We too are not any better when it comes to our relationship with our own in the North-east, for e.g., and in the servile and slavish attitude that our bureaucrats, and those in the hospitality industry display, when discriminating between foreign and local patrons. So much for Ubuntu.

Applications>>Accessories>Disk Usage Analyser, now i understand you would like to create more space first. Boot from your live CD, select Partition Editor, click on the partition that you want to change, resize/move, and then click on apply. This may destroy your data if done incorrectly, so back up before. Then create a new partition of the unallocated space and format it as per your preferences.

REMASTERKEYS! Sorry for yelling, but i am so thrilled, i just learned about it--i mean, this beats Norton Ghost, mondorescue, sbackup, etc. all rolled into one, hands down. It has a GUI too, and for a new user, this would be like a "balm for the bilious" to quote one of P.G. Wodehouse' characters. Haven't burned the iso, so i haven't checked it out on a virtual machine yet, but if it works, who needs to backup!

I guess we can take a poll for 'which' packages should be included in each category, and what are the most common hardware that is used in our community. Once decided on the packages, the developers/students in our community can build our own custom distro based on Ubuntu. This way, most of the people will have most of the hardware drivers and other packages 'out of the box'. So every time, may be after a week or so of release of new Ubuntu version, we can have our version released.
What say guys? :-)
